Graveyard Inscriptions

Statue of Sir Walter ScottA massive amount of effort has gone into transcribing the headstones and monuments in Scottish cemeteries by amateur groups all over the country. Many of these groups have published their records and they can be accessed in the Edinburgh Central Library or the offices of the Scottish Genealogy Society.

Cemeteries from Caithness to the Borders have been surveyed and these records can often prove a valuable source of genealogical information. However, it should be remembered that only a small percentage of the population were buried with a headstone; and an even smaller percentage remain to this day.

In some cases records kept by the church or local authority that manages the cemetery can be consulted for further information. In other cases a visit to a cemetery can prove worthwhile.

Monumental inscriptions can sometimes be used to confirm date or place of death although often the information provided is very limited. Where inscriptions are found these will always be fully transcribed to provide you with the most comprehensive information.
